Majored in Physics at SUNYAB, started PhD program in Physics at Univ. or Arizona. "Dropped out" to join the Navy as a Submarine/Nuclear Propulsion officer in 1979. Retired as a Navy CAPTAIN after 30 years, Served on four submarines, commanding USS HENRY M JACKSON (SSBN 730) (Gold) from 1998-2000. Was assigned to the Navy Staff in the Pentagon on 9-11, was the first US Navy officer assigned as Naval Attache in the then newly-opened US Embassy in Kyiv, Ukraine from 1995-1997, was Chief of Staff of NATO's Northern Submarine Forces (COMSUBNORTH) from 2005-2007.
